SECOND LANGUAGES - GROUP 2

The principle underlying the study of a second language at Verde Valley School is that students will develop a lifelong interest in language learning. The focus of all language learning classes is, therefore, on speaking and conversation, in addition to learning fundamental grammatical concepts. We not only encourage students to take possession of the language, but also attempt to make them more accomplished learners of language. It is the intention that students will leave the program with a working language base and that they will have developed an interest in and understanding of various cultures and peoples. We thus encourage Spanish language students to join a school Field Trip to Mexico, for example, so that they put their language to use while experiencing cultural and linguistic immersion in Mexico. The interrelated areas of emphasis in the VVS study of language are communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities.
